Buruji Kashamu &The Drug Case With US Government

PremiumTimes as reported that an appeal filed by a close ally of President Goodluck Jonathan, to quash Buruji indictment for heroin deal that was the alleged basis for the TV hit “Orange is the New Black.” in the US  has been dismissed by the United States Court of Appeal. Circuit Judges Posner, Kanne, and Tinder noted that because of “very serious criminal charges against him” Mr Kashamu did not want to be extradited to the US.

The controversy whether or not millionaire politician, self acclaimed philanthropist and Nigeria newest Godfather, Alhaji Buruji Kashamu and 14 others in 1998 were charged by a federal grand jury for their alleged involvement in an international conspiracy to smuggle heroin into the US. But the politician, a major campaigner for President Goodluck Jonathan in the South West, allegedly fled to the UK where the efforts made by the US to extradite him failed, before he returned to Nigeria.

Judge Posner said that although the United States has an extradition treaty with Nigeria and government has made no effort to extradite him.

In quick response, Kashamu published several rebuttals in the newspapers and alleged that he was not the one being sought after by the United States Government, but that the alleged crime was committed by one of his brother who is now late. Kashamu, in his defense, also claims that he had been cleared by a British Court and produced what purports to be the decision of a Magistrate Court in England. Kashamu also referred to his recent issuance of German visa sequel to his clearance by international security agencies as a further proof that he is not a fugitive and that the U.S may have been looking for a wrong person.

Meanwhile,Vanguard Nigeria has reported that a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), in Ogun State, Chief Toyin Umar has said that Senator-Elect, Prince Buruji Kashamu has not committed any sin to warrant his extradition to the United States of America over alleged drugs related offences.

According to the report,  the attempt has been politically orchestrated and those behind Kashamu’s extradition moves were only trying to run him down for political reasons.

Buruji Kashamu has no case with the USA, its just that some people are trying to run him down.If truly the Senator-Elect has a case to answer in the United States of America, the authorities know the right thing to do, and not that, some people would be flying a  kite for his extradition. I urge the brains behind the move to stop witch-hunting him. This same case was mentioned in the UK some years back, it ended up in favour of the senator-elect”, he said.

In a similar development, it was reportedly gathered from Premium Times that a group by the name Justice Watch Group of Nigeria, on Thursday petitioned the chief judge of the Federal High Court, questioning the morality of the case instituted by Ogun State Senator-elect, Buruji Kashamu, over his possible extradition to the United States of America.

The petition signed by the group’s chairman, Modele Arise, said as much as the body was committed to the attainment of fairness and justice in Nigeria, it worried that virtually all cases relating to Mr. Kashamu tend to end up before “specific judges”

We have been watching very keenly the trend in the Federal High Court whereby cases filed by or filed against Buruji Kashamu or anything bothering on his interest, most especially on Ogun State political issues end up before specific judges of the Federal High Court, Lagos,” it said.

The group further noted that since the dismissal of Mr. Archibong, virtually all cases pertaining to Mr. Kashamu were now before Justice Abang, who, the group claimed, dispensed judgments in the same manner as Mr. Archibong.

Sir, you may crosscheck and see the number of Ogun State PDP exco cases already determined by Honourable Justice O.E Abang in favour of the Buruji Kashamu faction,” the group said in its petition, which was copied to the NJC.

Apart from the NDLEA chairman, also joined as respondents in the suit marked FHC/L/CS/505/15 are the Inspector General of Police; Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission; Director General, Department of State Service; the Interpol National Central Bureau; and the

Recall that in December 2013 Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo warned President Goodluck of Buruji.

Putting a certified unashamed criminal wanted abroad to face justice and who has greatly contributed to corruption within the judiciary on a high profile of politics as you and your aides have done with the man you enthrone as PDP Zonal leader in the South-West is the height of disservice to this country politically and height of insult to the people of South-West in general and members of PDP in that zone in particular.”

In the mean time,Nigerian drug agents Saturday surrounded the house of a senator-elect. But Kashamu’s spokesman, Austin Oniyokor, said the agents did not have a warrant of arrest and

He has not been arrested but there is a siege to his house and an attempt to forcibly take him.”

This has been confirmed by the chairman of Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Ahmadu Giade.

PUNCH NG reported that Mr. Buruji Kashamu, has dragged the Chairman, National Drug Laws Enforcement Agency and 11 others to court over an alleged plot to extradite him to the United States of America to face trial on alleged drug-related offences.

Kashamu, who instituted a fundamental rights enforcement action before a Federal High Court in Lagos, is seeking a declaration that the move to abduct and forcibly transport him to the United States of America amounted to a violation of his right to liberty, freedom of association and freedom of movement as protected by sections 35, 40 and 41 of the Constitution, it report said.

He alleged that the plot was a further move in the political designs of former President Olusegun Obasanjo to ensure that he (Kashamu) was denied the opportunity of enjoying the mandate freely given to him to represent the people of Ogun East Senatorial District in the Senate.

Kashamu alleged that he had uncovered plans by Obasanjo to mastermind his arrest during his swearing in as a senator and to transport him to the US in a private plane to face trial before Judge Norgle.

Kashamu urged the court to declare as unlawful the alleged collusion between the 12 respondents and his political opponents, led by Obasanjo, to abduct and forcibly transport him to the US.

Trying to enjoy his moments, the senator-elect was seen last Saturday in grand style at the wedding reception of daughter of police chief, AIG Tunde Ogunsakin held at Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos.

Kashamu, Nigerian Guardian disclosed, arrived the venue around 4pm, full of life and was seen exchanging pleasantries with the bride’s father, Ogunsakin and a few other celebrities at the epoch-making wedding. After a spending few minutes at the party arena, he left with Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose.

Many no doubt were taken aback sighting the Ijebu-born politician showing up at a party despite his drug case that went viral in the polity.
