Good news! You may soon be able to dial landline or mobile phone numbers of any network from popular internet apps such as Skype, WhatsApp, Viber, or facebook. Wouldn’t it be amazing? Just imagine you no longer need to buy credit to make calls any more? Only data subscriptions.
On Monday, 28 March, 2016, a clearance for inter-connect agreements between internet service providers and telecom operators by an inter-ministerial panel of the government was given.
An interconnect agreement is a business contract between telecommunications organizations for the purpose of interconnecting their networks and exchanging telecommunications traffic. Interconnect agreements are found both in the public switched telephone network (Calls between MTN Nigeria, Glo , Airtel, Etisalat viz-a-viz) and the Internet (WhatsApp, facebook, viber, BBM calls etc.)
The move may result in substantially lower charges for voice calls (which would be billed as per data usage), though poor quality of internet networks – a general irritant with broadband services in many parts of the country especially in Nigeria – could be a dampener.
