Group Voice Calls is Coming to Facebook Messenger

You will soon be able to make Group voice calls using Facebook standalone messenger app right on your smartphones. This feature which is already been rolled out globally for iOS and Android users is totally free! So if you have joined any group chat on Facebook messenger, go ahead and start a group VoIP calls with up to 50 friends and family members.

This feature allows users to begin a group call by tapping the new phone icon at the bottom of a group chat window, picking which members they specifically want included in the call, and waiting for them to receive a Messenger notification and jump in on the conversation.

The social media company confirmed that a total of 50 people can be in on one group call at a time, and that anyone late to the call can join after the fact through the same phone icon in the group’s chat log.

Group calls are an extension of Messenger’s established one-on-one voice and video calling features, and the company has said that group video conferencing could be coming down the line, as well.

“Group video calling is definitely a use case that a lot of our people might be interested in at some point,” Stan Chudnovsky, Messenger’s head of product, said in an interview last year. “It would be a big deal if the whole [shakes hand to simulate lack of video stabilization]thing goes away.”

TechCrunch reports that Facebook began offering VoIP in 2013, fully rolled out one-on-one audio calls in April 2014 and, a year later, Mark Zuckerberg announced that Messenger already made up 10 percent of all mobile VoIP calls globally. It added that a Messenger spokesperson said,

“There are situations where typing isn’t enough and when people prefer talking to one another.”

Here is the announcement that was made on facebook:

The implication of this announcement is that, Facebook is ready to compete with Skype, and even let you set up easy conference calls with people whose numbers you don’t have.

Events of the past few months has pointed to the fact that Facebook is planning on making the the worlds most popular social platform more interesting to use and probably replace your phone number. Last year it started allowing all Facebook users to chat with each other even if they aren’t friends

Recall also that SMS and MMS are been reintegrated into its Messenger app though the launch of Facebook for Android Beta Testing Program, a program that is a heads-on challenge to it’s long age for – SMS.

Though i am looking forward to be able to dial landline or mobile phone numbers of any network from popular internet apps such as Skype, WhatsApp, Viber, or Facebook as already announced.

Meanwhile, if you just checked your Facebook messenger app to see if you already have this feature running, don’t be disappointed becuase the roll out only just began.
