Remix OS is a computer operating system based on Android-x86 project developed by Jide Technology (not the typical Yoruba ‘jide’ you know lol). The beta version of Remix OS has a hard drive and USB stick installation, 32-bit support,UEFI and OTA updates.
Jide is a company established by former Google employees and has brought the Remix OS for people who have been clamoring for an Android experience on a computer.
So, owners of PCs and Macs can now download Remix OS from the developer’s site and run it on any computer free of charge.
Remix OS for PC is free to download, free to install, and free to use. Is there anything else we missed? Oh that’s right, the updates are free as well.
The Remix OS has a start menu just like Windows, it’s very sleek, smooth and fast.
Remix OS also comes with the normal android file manger, it’s navigation is pretty simple just like you see on your android device. Well you can run android apps on your PC – Facebook, Instagram, BBM, Google Playstore, hey! you an even play Candy Crush lol. Everything works perfectly my friend.
What’s highly remarkable about Remix OS is it can be installed on a USB stick and plugged into any computer and in this guide, we shall be illustrating how to install and set up Remix OS, particularly on a USB drive, to run Android on any PC.[irp]
Before starting, make sure that you have these
- Windows PC
- Torrent Downloading Client
- USB 3.0 Stick with at least 8 GB (can handle FAT32 formatting and has a write speed of 20 MB/s)
- Remix OS USB Installer
- Remix OS 2.0.205
- BIOS (Basic Input / Output System) must have legacy boot mode activated
Before you begin, NOTE that Remix OS for PC is a Beta Version. This beta version intended for all early adopters who are excited to experience the latest in Android’s evolution. Android was designed for touchscreens and as there isn’t a touchscreen on most PCs, we want you to be aware the experience with certain apps may be different on your PC than on a mobile device.
1. Download the Remix USB Installer and Remix OS 2.0.
There are two things that you need to download: Remix OS 2.0.205 plus the Remix USB installer (essential in installing Remix OS 2.0.205 on the USB stick).
32-bit (Recommended) Legacy BIOS only | MD5: 9460f6400ee4517317ffdc516ad53a7f | Size: 653MB
64-bit | UEFI Boot & Legacy BIOS compatible | MD5: 5e02653c9b6707b6d7ce30c03d3508de | Size: 816MB
Direct Download: LINK (Slow download speed)
You have to download a torrent client, such as uTorrent, first before downloading from these two torrent links.
2. Format the USB Stick and change the formatting to FAT32.
The USB drive should be empty and the format is FAT32. Of course, it is implicit that you back up your files first before formatting the drive.[irp]
3. Start the Remix USB Installer.
The Remix OS file which you’ve downloaded from the above link doesn’t just have the OS, but it also has a USB Tool. The Remix USB installer is important in flashing Remix OS 2.0.205 to the USB stick. It also makes the USB Bootloader.
Upon starting this tool, you need to choose the ISO file plus the drive where you want to install it.
4. Select the ISO file and the USB flash drive.
The Remix OS USB tool will let you select an ISO file to load and a FAT formatted USB flash to install.
Press OK to start the installation.
The tool will then begin to extract and copy files and install the Bootloader into the USB Drive.
This process might take time, depending on the read and write speed of your computer system, It is recommended to stop doing other tasks while these files are being copied, because on slow computer systems, you might notice lags. Once it is completed, go ahead and follow the next step.[irp]
5. Reboot the computer.
Before rebooting your computer, search for the shortcut for Boot Menu for the particular brand model of your laptop or desktop.
Now, to view the Boot Menu, you have to press the key combinations. You will then be redirected to a listing of devices to boot. Choose the USB drive in which you have installed Remix OS 2.0.205.
In case it will not boot up, you need to change your BIOS Boot mode. Google “change BIOS Boot mode to legacy” to check the process.
6. Choose between Guest Mode and Resident Mode.
You will know that you are on the right track if you can see the blue screen, which will ask you to choose between Guest Mode and Resident Mode.
When you select Guest Mode, “no data will be saved after each session. Guest mode is for the one’s who are willing to test it and are not sure about using the OS again. It won’t store any of your tasks, data nor the app installations. Once you reboot you will lose all the data.
” Meanwhile, when you click on Resident Mode, “all your data and apps are saved.” That’s the reason why it takes 5-15 minutes based on the “System Configuration” and once getting into Resident mode you won’t have to install the Remix OS again and again!
7. Install Remix OS 2.0.205.
You’re almost ready to start the Remix OS 2.0.205’s GUI. Just three more things to do and you’re good to go.
First off, you will be prompted to select the language. Second, you have to agree with the user agreement.
And the last step (the easiest one, actually): click the Start button.
The Bottom Line
These are the steps in installing and setting up Remix OS 2.0.205 on your USB stick. Now, you’re ready to experience what Jide calls its “state of the art Android-based operating system.”
