Nintendo NX, the latest console, from the popular video game platform, Nintedo, has been confirmed to launch worldwide in March 2017. Nintendo said the new video game console will be a “brand-new concept.”
On page three of its quarterly financial report, Nintendo said “For our dedicated video game platform business, Nintendo is currently developing a gaming platform codenamed “NX” with a brand-new concept,” the company explained in its report. “NX will be launched in March 2017 globally.”
However, no further specifics relating to the Nintendo NX were discussed in the report.
Sometime last year, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata mentioned the company is creating a new next-generation hardware concept called NX.
Iwata revealed sparse details of the new “dedicated game system” during the joint announcement of its partnership with Japanese mobile gaming company DeNA. A partnership that will result in the development of smartphone games starring Nintendo characters along with a new multi-platform platform software service.
Blogger Emily Rogers, who has been following up on NX’s software-streaming, claims that Nintendo will significantly accelerate first party software production on NX. Citing “sources close to Nintendo” she says:
“The big fundamental focal point (and overall goal) behind NX is to vastly increase the software output from Nintendo’s first party teams and studios.”
She goes on to say “There is a new strategy that was put in place to create and release first party software at a faster rate.” and “Multiple unannounced Wii U projects were moved over to NX.”
It remains unclear what Nintendo means by “brand-new concept,” but it needs a new plan to work — and fast because the Wii U has been wildly disappointing.
In December last year Nintendo president and CEO Tatsumi Kimishima reiterated that the company was “not building the next version of Wii or Wii U” and that the device will be something “unique and different.”
CNNMoney reported that Nintendo has sold fewer than 13 million Wii U consoles total since its November 2012 release. By contrast its two biggest rivals launched their newest video game consoles a year later and have nearly doubled and tripled Nintendo’s sales.
It further stated that the company has been unable to come close to matching the more than 100 million Wii consoles that it sold since 2006. Though Wii revolutionized the video game industry with motion control, a concept that was quickly adopted and then bested by the competition but the Wii U’s tablet-like control failed to capture customers’ imaginations in the same way.
The question is: Can the Wii U’s failures lead to success with the Nintendo NX? For now, we keep our fingers crossed as we expect to get more info on the Nitendo NX latest console.
