Today you can sign up to a bewildering array of free services that offer to automatically upload your smartphone photos to the cloud, sync your documents across multiple devices, and enable you to work collaboratively on the web.

More than just external hardrives, many of these sites are collaboration platforms that you can use to share documents with friends.
